All of Global Teas teas are certified organic, but what exactly does that mean? How do you know the product you’re receiving really is organic? Here is some basic insight from the USDA website . If you’d like to read about organic certification in more detail, visit the USDA Organic Program website.
What does “Certified Organic” Mean?
The vision of the USDA Organic Program is to provide “Integrity from farm to table.” They define organic as “a labeling term that indicates that the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods.”
How are these requirements enforced?
“Organic certification agencies inspect and verify that organic farmers, ranchers, distributors, processors, and traders are complying with the USDA organic regulations.”
Why is the organic seal on the label important?
In order to sell, label, or represent their products as organic, operations must follow all of the specifications set out by the USDA organic regulations.
If you see the USDA organic seal on a label, the product is certified organic and has 95 percent or more organic content.
The organic seal can only be used if the product … “Has a valid organic certificate from an NOP accredited certifying agent or one authorized through an international trade partnership with the United States. Products using the USDA organic seal or the word “organic” must meet all requirements in the USDA organic regulations. Violations may lead to compliance and enforcement actions, including fines up to $11,000 per violation. Additionally, an organic certificate may be suspended or revoked.”
The organic seal on our Global Teas labels indicates that our teas have met all the requirements set forth by the USDA. From the tea farms on which they were grown through the packaging facilities, our teas have been grown organically and packaged in organic approved facilities.
We want to ensure that while you’re buying a product that’s good for the health of the world, you’re also buying a product that’s good for you too! So being 100% certified organic is very important to us!
